News: 50km for £50k fundraising walk cancelled

Papworth Trust is sorry to announce the cancellation of the 50km for £50k event this Saturday. Perhaps this is not a total surprise as other local events are being cancelled including both the Cambridgeshire and Suffolk Shows.

Our decision is based on the safety and enjoyment of our walkers and volunteers. Following serious consideration, we have decided that the heavy rainfall in the last week, and further downpours predicted for this week across Suffolk and Cambridgeshire make the walk unviable. The rain has waterlogged the route to the extent that certain areas are almost impossible for walkers to pass. We know that walking 50km is already a hard challenge and we believe that the adverse weather conditions would make the walk unreasonably difficult and unpleasant.

We would like to offer a huge thank you to the walkers and the volunteers that signed up for this event. We have offered an alternative 50k walk to keep up the fundraising momentum and which means that effort gone into training by our entrants will not be lost. We will be entering walkers for the 'Thames Pathway Challenge', a 50km walk along stretches of the Thames on 29 September 2012.
